Rhythm and Alps, little sister of Rhythm and Vines, is back for 2013 with a brand new date and home!
The new location is the beautiful Cardrona Valley, 15 minutes south of Wanaka, Central Otago. The festival site is located between the famous Cardrona Ski resort and the high rolling terrain of the Pisa Plateau. The fifteen year consent was issued by the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Rhythm and Alps will cater for up to 5000 campers this year, employ up to 100 local persons and involve local clubs.
Rhythm and Alps is the only two-day music festival in the South Island, and due to popular demand, will run at the same time as world class juggernaut Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne. New festival dates 30-31 December ensure South Islander’s have a festival to see in the new year with music and style

Challenge Wanaka is one of the world’s toughest and most honest long distance triathlons set against the stunning alpine backdrop of New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Challenge Wanaka is one of the world’s toughest and most honest long distance triathlons set against the stunning alpine backdrop of New Zealand’s Southern Alps and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. It heads New Zealand’s largest triathlon festival, featuring events for all ages and abilities.
Part of the renowned Challenge Family global series of long distance triathlons, Challenge Wanaka is the race of a lifetime for athletes wanting to compete and holiday in paradise. Join over 1,600 top professional and amateur athletes from all over the globe to compete on the world’s most scenic course - 3.8km swim in crystal clear waters, 180km bike around two alpine lakes and a 42.2km run which is 75% off-road along the water’s edge.
The festival kicks off on Sunday January 12 with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge for budding triathletes aged six to fifteen. There’s also the Radio Wanaka 5km Fun Run and Swim the Course during the week before the two highlight events.
The streets of downtown Wanaka turn into a high speed race circuit on Friday January 17 when New Zealand’s top triathletes, including Olympians and national champions compete in the Contact Tri Series. This thrilling criterium style racing is a huge hit with spectators and provides exciting race conditions for the athletes as they compete in this, the first of four national sprint races to decide the national championship.
The week culminates with the flagship Challenge Wanaka race on Saturday January 18 which runs simultaneously with the Lake Wanaka Half. Thousands of spectators line the route and finish chute cheering on these inspirational contenders as they compete in the most arduous of the triathlon disciplines. The finish line is in the heart of the Lake Wanaka township and in true ‘Challenge’ style, there’s a fun finish line party with music and fireworks to welcome the athletes home late into the night.
1 Feb 2014 Rippon Open Air Festival
Founded last millennium and now celebrating its 10th festival, the much-loved event for the true music lovers of the nation returns to Rippon Vineyard, Lake Wanaka this summer. Run on a not-for-profit basis since 1997, Rippon 2014 features ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE, HOMEBREW, FAT FREDDY¹S DROP, THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION, LADI6, DIE!DIE!DIE!, KODY NIELSON, BROCKAFLOWERSAURUS-REX, MYELE MANZANZA, THE DIGG, SOME OTHER PLANETS and ESTERE. Special guests P Digsss, KPz, Ria Hall, Sunshine Sound System, DJ Reno and Peacekeepers complete the mix In the Rippon Hall, Goldmembers will be treated to performances by Warren Maxwell, Jesse Sheehan, Danny Fairley and Zoe Moon. They also get access to the spanky indoor restrooms and a cash cafe/bar. It's the people who attend this event that make it the most sought-after festival of the summer. They bring an openness, and an energy that truly electrifies the amphitheatre. As this event has a tendency to sell out well before the festival date and only comes around once every two years, we recommend a buy now-panic later approach.
